The first batch of 500 young Nigeriens selected for vocational training in Algeria departed from Niamey on September 29, 2026. They were accompanied by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Employment, Aissatou Abdoulaye Tondi, and Algerian Ambassador to Niger, Saadi Ahmed. The group will undergo training in 19 fields across various professional establishments in Algeria.
The young Nigeriens were received by Algerian authorities and their escorts upon arrival in Algeria. They will be dispatched to several centers and institutes for professional training and education, where their accommodation and care will be provided for the duration of their stay. The goal is to enable them to benefit from Algeria's expertise and infrastructure in vocational training.
The program, dubbed "The 500 Young People," aims to enhance the skills of Nigeriens and facilitate their entry into the job market. The selected fields of study, including electrical engineering, plumbing, and welding, were determined by the National Observatory of Employment based on market needs. The training will last between 20 to 45 days, depending on the specialty.
Before departing, the young Nigeriens underwent a sensitization session led by Minister Aissatou Abdoulaye Tondi, who emphasized the importance of discipline, responsibility, and respect for rules. She also warned that their individual behavior would reflect on the country's reputation and that their success would pave the way for other Nigeriens.
An accompanying guide has been prepared in French, Zarma, and Hausa to help the beneficiaries navigate their stay in Algeria. The Algerian ambassador highlighted the significance of the initiative in strengthening relations between Niamey and Algiers. A second batch of 500 young people is expected to depart soon.
The program was made possible through a cooperative effort between the two countries, with the Nigerien and Algerian ministers of labor holding a video conference to finalize the arrangements. The initiative aligns with the vision of Niger's President Abdourahamane Tiani and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to invest in youth and skills development.
Upon their return, a mechanism will be put in place to support the beneficiaries in valorizing their skills and integrating into the job market. The program reflects the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between Niger and Algeria, with both countries seeking to empower their youth and drive development.
