The Niger Ministry of Justice and Human Rights recently celebrated Prisoners' Day at the Tahoua prison, with the theme "Psychosocial support for inmates, a lever for well-being, resilience, and social reintegration." The event was attended by Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Amina Abdourahamane, who emphasized the importance of addressing the psychological and social needs of prisoners. The celebration included various activities such as stress management, emotional intelligence, conflict prevention, and communication skills.

The event aimed to provide a platform for prisoners to express themselves, acquire new skills, and prepare for life after incarceration. Abdourahamane highlighted that detention should not be synonymous with a loss of dignity, hope, or opportunity for change. She stressed that psychosocial support is essential in helping prisoners cope with the challenges of incarceration and prepare for their eventual release.

The Prisoners' Day celebrations included several communications on topics such as stress and anxiety management, emotional regulation, conflict prevention, and non-violent communication. The goal was to equip prisoners with the skills and tools needed to manage their emotions, build resilience, and develop positive relationships. The event also featured a traditional wrestling match between prisoners, which added a festive atmosphere to the celebrations.

Abdourahamane emphasized that the celebration was not just about entertainment but also about creating a conducive environment for prisoners to reflect on their experiences and prepare for their future. She encouraged prisoners to participate actively in the discussions, ask questions, and share their concerns and experiences. The Secretary General also acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders who contributed to the organization of the event.

The event was also attended by Mamadou N'daw, representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who expressed his organization's commitment to working with the Ministry of Justice to improve prison conditions and support the rehabilitation of prisoners. N'daw promised to work closely with the Ministry to ensure that prisoners receive the support they need to reintegrate into society upon their release.

The celebrations were preceded by speeches from the Regisseur of the Tahoua prison, the prosecutor of the Tahoua Tribunal de Grande Instance, and the director general of the prison administration. They welcomed the mission team and expressed their hopes for a successful event. The speeches set the tone for a day of reflection, dialogue, and skill-building.
