Specialized teams have been working around the clock to secure the Goumeri W-8 oil site in Niger's Agadem block, contain crude oil spills, and put an end to the eruption that started on September 25. According to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum on October 12, the situation remains partially under control. The incident occurred at a well operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum S.A. and involved significant amounts of crude oil and gas being projected over 10 meters high.

As of October 12, the situation was not yet fully under control, according to the Secretary General of the Niger Ministry of Petroleum. The affected platform, shared with wells Goumeri W-3 and W-4, suffered significant damage, compromising the integrity of these two neighboring installations. The Ministry's statement noted that initial findings suggest the incident is not linked to criminal or terrorist activity, although the exact causes of the eruption have not been fully established.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, but two employees who were exposed on the first day were hospitalized and received medical care. A permanent mission from the Ministry of Petroleum was deployed to the site immediately after the incident to monitor operations and report on their progress. The government has also taken conservative measures and control actions against the operator and launched an independent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and establish responsibilities.

The investigation will be supported by Algerian expertise. The government has assured that all responsibilities will be established and assumed, and all damages will be covered in accordance with existing laws. The ongoing operations involve containing the spilled oil using dikes, trenches, and basins before recovery and transportation to the Goumeri treatment station.

The teams are also working to secure the site and neighboring wells, with permanent gas monitoring, restricted access, and strict fire prevention measures in place. The Ministry of Petroleum emphasized that protecting people, limiting environmental damage, and definitively stopping the eruption are the priorities of the intervention.

The Ministry has urged local populations to strictly respect the security perimeter established around the site, noting that the incident is confined to the Goumeri W-8, W-3, and W-4 well platforms. The Ministry has assured the public that it will provide regular updates on the situation.

The incident at Goumeri W-8 highlights the importance of stringent safety measures and emergency response planning in the oil and gas industry. The government's swift response and commitment to transparency are crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support.
