Niger's Health Minister, Colonel-major Garba Hakimi, accompanied by the governor of Zinder region, Colonel Massalatchi Mahaman Sani, and the representative of UNICEF in Niger, Mme Djanabou Mahonde, visited the department of Magaria on October 3, 2026. The delegation inspected the newly constructed Integrated Health Centers (CSI) in Géré, Gocholo, and Faraye, as part of the Lafia Iyali project, funded by the Nigerien government and supported by UNICEF.

The CSI facilities, categorized as type 2, offer comprehensive healthcare services, including curative and preventive care, observation rooms, laboratories, consultation rooms, maternity wards, and staff accommodations. The centers are equipped with water and electricity supply systems, as well as equipment to enhance their autonomy and functionality. The minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of the infrastructure and commended the contractors and stakeholders involved in their construction.

A total of 20 CSI type 2 facilities are being constructed in the Zinder region in 2026, across several communes, to strengthen healthcare coverage and bring services closer to the population. The minister highlighted that the visited facilities are of high quality and meet the required standards. He emphasized that the construction of these centers aligns with the government's policy of decentralizing healthcare services and making them more accessible to rural communities.

The visit also provided an opportunity for local authorities to express their appreciation for the new healthcare facilities. The chief of the Bandé canton, Haboubacar Yahaya Louche, praised the construction of the CSI centers and thanked the President of the Republic for the initiative. He stressed the importance of community involvement in maintaining and protecting the facilities, particularly the solar panels, which are crucial to their operation.

The ministerial delegation's visit to Magaria aimed to assess the state of the healthcare infrastructure, identify potential challenges, and discuss measures to address them. The delegation's findings will inform future healthcare development plans and ensure the effective functioning of the new facilities. The construction of these centers is expected to improve healthcare outcomes and increase access to quality healthcare services for rural communities.

The Lafia Iyali project, which funded the construction of the CSI centers, is part of a broader effort to strengthen healthcare systems in Niger. The project aims to improve healthcare infrastructure, enhance the quality of services, and increase access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations. The Nigerien government, with the support of UNICEF and other partners, is committed to improving healthcare outcomes and achieving universal health coverage.

The successful implementation of the Lafia Iyali project and the construction of the CSI centers in Magaria demonstrate the government's commitment to improving healthcare services in Niger. The visit by the minister and his delegation highlighted the importance of community engagement, infrastructure development, and partnerships in achieving healthcare goals. The new facilities are expected to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of the local population.
