Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab was received by Niger's President Abdourahamane Tiani in Niamey as part of a working visit to the country. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on hydrocarbon exploration and production. President Tiani praised Algeria's experience in the oil and gas industry, expressing his country's desire to benefit from the expertise of Algerian energy company Sonatrach.
The two leaders discussed various projects that embody the partnership between Algeria and Niger, including Sonatrach's activities in Niger, particularly the exploration and production project in the Kefra oil block. They also explored opportunities to develop new oil blocks proposed by Niger, such as the Bilma block. The meeting was attended by Algerian Ambassador to Niger and Sonatrach's CEO, Noureddine Dahoudi.
President Tiani and Minister Arkab emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between Sonatrach and Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP. They agreed to expand their partnership to cover various stages of the hydrocarbon industry, enabling the optimal use of natural resources and strengthening Niger's national capacities. The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project was also a key topic of discussion.
President Tiani stressed the strategic importance of the TSGP project for the three countries involved and its potential to support economic and social development, as well as regional energy integration. The parties agreed to continue coordinating efforts to push forward with the project's implementation, including launching a topographical survey of the pipeline's route on Nigerien territory.
Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to supporting Niger's development of its hydrocarbon sector, in line with directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between institutions in both countries to enhance energy resources, transfer expertise, and build capacities.
In a press statement, Minister Arkab highlighted the significance of the meeting, which covered strategic projects such as cooperation in exploration and production, particularly in the Kefra block. He also mentioned the potential for expanding cooperation to other exploration blocks and the marketing and valuation of Nigerien crude oil.
The Algerian delegation, including Sonatrach's CEO and other senior officials, also met with Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine. They reviewed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, and explored ways to strengthen partnerships that serve the common interests of both countries.
