The Niger State government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting healthy living, physical fitness, and unity amongst citizens and government functionaries through the "Sports Awareness Road Walk". This initiative was launched on October 28, 2026, at the Government House in Minna. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, civil servants, and sports enthusiasts.

The Head of Civil Service in Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, described the initiative as a vital platform for promoting physical well-being, teamwork, and stronger relationships among public servants. He emphasized that routine exercise can help government officials and civil servants interact, strengthen relationships, and improve communication across different ministries, departments, and agencies.

Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, who represented Governor Umaru Bago, noted that the exercise aims to bring unity and harmony among public servants. He expressed optimism that subsequent events will witness a larger turnout of people. The Head of Service regretted that the exercise could not continue after it was initially introduced months back due to security concerns.

Governor Umaru Bago emphasized the importance of regular physical activity in preventing health challenges and improving overall well-being. He encouraged citizens to engage in exercise suitable for their age, physical condition, and medical history. The Governor's "Bago 2026 Sports Awareness Campaign" is organized by the Niger State Ministry of Sports Development and will be a monthly event.

The newly appointed State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Isah Wakili, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and described the road walk as a worthwhile program capable of encouraging greater public awareness and participation in sporting and recreational activities. He promised improvements in planning and execution in subsequent editions.

The Permanent Secretary of the Niger State Ministry, Garba Ngaski, emphasized the importance of sustaining the initiative as part of the state government's broader strategies to promote public health and wellness. He noted that the whole idea behind the road walk sports awareness is to improve the health system and that sustainability is the foundation of the initiative.

The road walk, which took off from the Ahmadu Bahago Sports Complex, Bosso road, and ended at Government House, had various stakeholders, including the Niger State Football Association (NSFA) and Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) represented.
