The 10th African Salon of Invention and Innovative Enterprise (SAIIT 2026) opened in Niamey, Niger, on October 5, 2026. The event, co-organized by the Nigerien Government and the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), brings together innovators and stakeholders to discuss intellectual property and financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Niger's Minister of Transport, Abdourahamane Amadou, officially presided over the ceremony, emphasizing the need for increased funding for African technological innovations.

Minister Amadou highlighted the importance of intellectual property as a means of creating national wealth and ensuring the value added from African innovations remains in Africa. He noted that protecting intellectual property is crucial for guaranteeing that the value created by African innovators benefits the continent's industries and youth. The Minister also stressed that intellectual property should not be seen as an abstract concept or a distant administrative formality.

The Minister identified a significant obstacle to Africa's technological progress: the gap between financial institutions and the knowledge economy. He argued that banks and investors often rely on outdated paradigms, requiring traditional collateral while ignoring the value of intangible assets. Amadou emphasized that it is paradoxical to lament the weakness of innovative SMEs while refusing to recognize the economic value of the patents they hold.

Minister Amadou called on the African banking sector and financial partners to adopt a cultural and strategic shift, recognizing that investing in African innovation is not a speculative risk but a highly profitable and patriotic investment for the continent's future. He also announced that the Nigerien government will take responsibility for strengthening national mechanisms for financing research and innovation, including the Fund for Research Support.

The 10th edition of SAIIT, running from October 5 to 7, 2026, focuses on the theme "Intellectual Property and Financing for Innovative SMEs." The event aims to promote dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders, exploring ways to bridge the financing gap for African innovators. Minister Amadou's call for increased funding resonated with the audience, emphasizing the need for collective action to support African innovation.

The African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) plays a crucial role in promoting intellectual property rights in Africa. As a co-organizer of SAIIT, OAPI contributes to the development of a supportive ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship on the continent. The organization's efforts aim to foster a culture of innovation, protecting and promoting African intellectual property.

The Nigerien government's commitment to supporting innovation is evident in its hosting of SAIIT 2026. By providing a platform for innovators, policymakers, and financial institutions to interact, the government aims to stimulate the growth of a vibrant innovation ecosystem in Africa. The event's outcomes are expected to contribute to the development of effective strategies for financing and supporting African technological innovations.
