The Secrétaire général de la région de Tillabéri, M. Arma Yaou Maman, officially launched the enrollment operation for the AES biometric national identity card in the Tillabéri region on October 6, 2026. The ceremony took place at the Direction régionale de la Police nationale de Tillabéri and was attended by local authorities, police officials, and experts. This initiative aims to modernize the legal identification of individuals in Niger.
The biometric identity card is a highly secure document designed to prevent fraud and identity theft. It contains several levels of protection, including the holder's biometric data such as fingerprints, photograph, voice, and iris. The card is available to individuals aged 15 and above and is valid for five years. To obtain the card, applicants must provide required documents, including an extract from the birth certificate or a substitute judgment, a nationality certificate, and proof of residence.
M. Arma Yaou Maman expressed his satisfaction with the launch of this operation in the region and highlighted the importance of this initiative in modernizing legal identification. He also praised the efforts of Niger's top authorities, including the Président de la République, Chef de l’État, Général d’Armée Abdourahamane Tiani, and the Premier ministre, M. Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, for making this reform a reality.
The enrollment process requires applicants to pay a fee, which is set at 4,500 FCFA for the standard procedure and 9,000 FCFA for the express procedure. Payments can be made through various channels, including Airtel Money, NITA, or AMANA Transfert d’argent. The standard procedure takes three to four weeks, while the express procedure allows cardholders to receive their cards within 72 hours.
The biometric national identity card is part of the Alliance des États du Sahel's efforts to enhance security and identification processes in member countries. This initiative is expected to improve the accuracy and reliability of identification documents and reduce the risk of identity-related crimes.
According to local authorities, the introduction of the biometric identity card will have a positive impact on the population, particularly in terms of access to services and rights. The card is expected to become a vital document for daily life, facilitating interactions with government agencies, financial institutions, and other organizations.
