The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Ghana's Western North Region has organised a refresher training for District Managers and Public Relations Officers (PROs) from all eight district offices. The training aims to strengthen their capacity to provide accurate and consistent information on the operations and new initiatives of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This move is part of the NHIA's efforts to improve public education on its programmes. The training is timely, considering the Authority's rollout of new initiatives.

The Acting Regional Director of the NHIA, Frank Duku, welcomed participants and emphasised the importance of the training. He noted that District Managers and PROs play a crucial role in ensuring members and the wider public understand the new initiatives and take full advantage of available services. As frontline managers and communication officers, they serve as important ambassadors and the voice of the NHIS at the district and community levels. Their role in public communication is vital to the success of the Authority's programmes.

Frank Duku urged participants to utilise various platforms, such as radio discussions, public forums, and community engagements, to explain NHIS policies and programmes in simple and accessible ways. He encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained from the training to improve their day-to-day work and contribute to strengthening the image and operations of the Authority in the region. The training is expected to enhance the communication skills of District Managers and PROs.

The Regional Operations Manager, Dr Isaac Damptey, focused on the operational side of the Authority. He stressed the need for closer coordination between the Operations and Public Relations units. According to him, communication activities should be closely aligned with the operational objectives of the NHIS. Accurate and timely information can improve public understanding of the Scheme and ultimately support better service delivery.

The NHIA's efforts to strengthen its communication drive are part of its broader strategy to improve public education on its programmes. The Authority has introduced new initiatives, including the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC) and the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme. These initiatives require sustained public education to ensure their success. The training of District Managers and PROs is a key component of this strategy.

The Western North Region is one of the areas where the NHIA is focusing its communication efforts. The region has eight district offices, each with a District Manager and PRO. The training is expected to equip these officials with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively communicate the NHIA's programmes and policies to the public. This will help to improve public understanding of the NHIS and its initiatives.

The NHIA's communication drive is crucial to the success of its programmes. By providing accurate and consistent information, the Authority can improve public understanding of the NHIS and its initiatives. This, in turn, can lead to better service delivery and improved health outcomes for members. The training of District Managers and PROs is a key step in achieving this goal.
