The Franklin Ngoforo Foundation has initiated the Tony Ezenna Scholarship Scheme (TESS) to honour renowned businessman and philanthropist Chief Tony Ezenna. The scheme aims to sponsor 1,000 indigent students from Ideato, Imo State, over the next decade. The programme was unveiled in Akakwo, Ideato North local government area of Imo State. Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, founder of the foundation, announced that the first phase will fully sponsor 20 beneficiaries from Junior Secondary School (JSS1) through university education.
Ngoforo stated that TESS is designed to transform Chief Ezenna's legacy of philanthropy and community development into a sustained investment in the younger generation. He described Chief Ezenna as a source of identity and pride for the people of Ideato, citing his contributions to road construction, sports development, education, and church projects. Ngoforo referenced Chief Ezenna's intervention in the construction of the Orlu-Umuchima-Akokwa Road and his investments in human and community development.
According to Ngoforo, Chief Ezenna's contributions have brought recognition and respect to the Ideato community. He stressed that the best way to honour the philanthropist is to continue the culture of giving and empowering others. Ngoforo declared, "Ideato has not honoured Chief Tony Ezenna enough. If he lifted people, then let us lift people. If he opened doors, let us open doors." He emphasized that TESS is not merely designed to pay school fees but to develop beneficiaries into productive members of society.
The foundation's broader development programme will extend beyond formal education to include skills acquisition, vocational training, and business support. This programme is particularly for young people who may not follow conventional academic pathways. A committee has been constituted to select the pioneer beneficiaries, considering financial need, intellectual ability, potential, and equitable representation across Ideato.
Ngoforo urged the beneficiaries to regard the scholarship as a responsibility rather than merely a gift. He told them that poverty must not decide who becomes great and that somebody has invested in their future because they believe their future can become an investment in the future of others. He expressed optimism that the scholarship beneficiaries will justify the confidence reposed in them.
