Pencils of Promise, a non-governmental organization, has commissioned and handed over a newly constructed 2-unit classroom block with sanitation facilities and a renovated 6-unit classroom block at Ogome Anglican Basic School in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region. This initiative aims to improve the educational infrastructure in rural communities. The commissioning ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including the Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education and the Municipal Chief Executive.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education, Mr. John Gasu, highlighted the challenges facing the municipality, including inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of teachers. He emphasized the importance of providing suitable accommodation and good buildings for teachers, particularly in rural communities, where inadequate facilities can negatively impact teaching and learning. Mr. Gasu's comments underscored the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges.

Hon. Francis Akumatey, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, noted that inadequate accommodation remains a significant challenge affecting teacher retention and availability in rural communities. He believes that providing decent accommodation close to school facilities can motivate teachers to remain in the communities where they work and enable them to respond promptly to the needs of children. This, he argues, can help improve educational outcomes.

The Country Director of Pencils of Promise, Mr. Freeman Gobah, reported that the organization has been supporting communities in the Eastern and Volta Regions with school buildings for the past ten years. He emphasized that the organization will continue to assist schools that genuinely need such support. Mr. Gobah stressed that poverty should not be a barrier to education, and that education must remain accessible to every Ghanaian citizen.

Mr. Gobah also highlighted the importance of improving education infrastructure and ensuring that teachers have good conditions of service. He called for closer cooperation between the Yilo Krobo Municipality, traditional authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that vulnerable children receive timely support. This, he believes, can help address some of the systemic challenges facing education in rural communities.

Pencils of Promise's initiative at Ogome Anglican Basic School is part of a broader effort to support education in rural communities. The organization's focus on upgrading rural schools in the Eastern and Volta Regions reflects its commitment to improving educational outcomes in these areas. By providing essential infrastructure, Pencils of Promise aims to create a more conducive learning environment for students.

The commissioning of the 2-unit classroom block with sanitation facilities and the renovated 6-unit classroom block at Ogome Anglican Basic School demonstrates the impact of collaborative efforts between NGOs, local authorities, and community stakeholders in improving education in Ghana. The project is expected to benefit students and teachers at the school, enhancing the overall quality of education in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.
