A non-governmental organisation, Family Transformation and Community Development Initiative, has taken a significant step towards empowering persons with disabilities in Ebonyi State. The organisation has sponsored 15 persons with disabilities to acquire vocational skills, enabling them to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to society. This initiative is the brainchild of Joseph Nwibo, the founder of the organisation, who believes that disability should not hinder anyone from becoming productive.

According to Joseph Nwibo, the initiative was born out of his conviction that persons with disabilities have the potential to be productive and contribute to society. He disclosed that the organisation has spent about N3 million to sponsor the 15 beneficiaries to acquire skills in various vocational trades, including welding, laundry services, tailoring, hairdressing, confectionery, and phone repairs. Nwibo's personal experience of growing up in a poor family has motivated him to support persons with disabilities.

Nwibo's background has given him a deep understanding of the difficulties faced by people struggling to survive without adequate support. He believes that disability should not prevent anyone from becoming productive and contributing meaningfully to society. The organisation's initiative aims to provide persons with disabilities with the opportunity to learn skills and become self-reliant. The beneficiaries have expressed joy over the opportunity and have thanked Nwibo for coming to their aid.

The Ebonyi State Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Persons with Disabilities, Enyi Nwabueze, has commended Nwibo for the initiative. He assured that the beneficiaries would make good use of the opportunity and, in turn, empower other persons living with disabilities after acquiring the necessary skills. Nwabueze praised Nwibo for teaching them how to catch fish instead of just giving them fish.

The skills acquisition programme will last for varying durations, ranging from six months to a year and six months. The beneficiaries have promised to take the programme seriously and use the knowledge gained to improve their livelihoods. The organisation's initiative has been well-received by the persons with disabilities, who have expressed gratitude for the support.
