The Innocent Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation recently organized a special reading of "Against All Odds: The Biography of Innocent Chukwuma" at Roving Heights Bookstore in Lagos. The event brought together family members, friends, civil society advocates, writers, and media professionals to reflect on the experiences, values, and convictions that shaped Chukwuma's life and work. The session was moderated by journalist Joel Nwokeoma, a close friend of Chukwuma.

The biography's author, Obinna Ezugwu, shared his experience of documenting Chukwuma's life, describing him as a humble man whose disposition stood out despite his accomplishments. Ezugwu recounted how he met Chukwuma at events, where he was often introduced with grand titles, yet remained humble. The author highlighted Chukwuma's remarkable life, which was marked by resilience and a commitment to human rights.

Chukwuma's wife, Josephine, also spoke at the event, recalling her husband's humility and deep commitment to human dignity. She shared that one of Chukwuma's core principles was to protect his dignity at all costs, often saying, "Take everything from me, but not my dignity." Josephine revealed that Chukwuma had planned to work on his memoir during a sabbatical before his sudden passing.

The event highlighted the foundation's efforts to preserve Chukwuma's legacy through education. The Innocent Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation plans to take "Against All Odds" to students through intra-school book readings and an essay competition. Participants discussed ways to reach wider audiences with Chukwuma's story, including adapting the biography for the screen.

Richard Mammah, a writer and media professional, described Chukwuma's life as a lesson in resilience and a "can-do spirit." Born during the Nigerian Civil War era, Chukwuma grew up in difficult circumstances but went on to become the first member of his family to attend university. Despite being expelled during his student years due to activism, he completed his education and became a prominent human rights advocate.

Chukwuma's contributions to human rights and democratic development are well-documented. In 1997, he founded the CLEEN Foundation, formerly known as the Centre for Law Enforcement Education. Through this organization, he became an influential voice in policing, criminal justice reform, and democratic development.

The book reading event was a testament to Chukwuma's lasting impact on human rights and social activism in Nigeria. The Innocent Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation's efforts to preserve his legacy through education and storytelling will help ensure his story continues to inspire future generations.
