He said the accused were young people and questioned why senior EFF leaders had not attended the court proceedings to support them. He suggested that the accused may have been used by others.
Mchunu stated that, given the many pressing issues facing the country, he did not believe there was a need to continue pursuing the matter. He said his supporters had prevailed and the heritage event had eventually taken place peacefully following police intervention. He said he hoped those involved had learned from the incident.
Mchunu plans to engage the sound equipment service provider and ask that its lawyers withdraw the case against the accused. He said it would then be up to the court to determine how the matter should proceed, including whether to issue a warning or take other appropriate action.
