Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has announced his intention to contest for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Akwuegbu, known as the 'Austrian Bomber' during his playing days, made the declaration following the resignation of President Ibrahim Gusau and the entire Executive Committee. He aims to return Nigeria to the world stage with a distinct football philosophy for all national teams.
Akwuegbu's decision to run for the NFF presidency was driven by Nigeria's failure to qualify for two consecutive World Cup tournaments despite having an abundance of talents. He unveiled a five-point agenda that includes youth development, welfare of ex-internationals, transparency and integrity, the World Cup dream, and "Grassroots to Glory". Central to his blueprint is creating a Nigerian football philosophy that defines how national teams play from U-17 to Super Eagles.
Akwuegbu emphasized the need for Nigeria to have a distinct style of play, citing examples of countries like the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain. He believes that a merit-based, professional structure is essential for the national team. Akwuegbu stated that players in lower divisions or leagues abroad should not be eligible to play for the national team.
The former Grazer AK and RC Lens forward highlighted his administrative experience with Heartland FC, Mighty Jets, and Plateau United, as well as owning three functioning football clubs and academies. He holds a degree in Mental Health and a Master's degree in Nursing, which he believes complements his football and administrative exposure.
Akwuegbu's ambition has received backing from his immediate constituency, PFAN, and stakeholders, including former Super Eagles coach Chief Godwin Koko Uwua. Several internationals, led by Chikelue Iloenyosi and Nwankwo Kanu, have also expressed support for his candidacy. Akwuegbu called for a transparent, credible, and merit-based electoral process.
Akwuegbu promised to prioritize local leagues, academies, referees, and coaches' administration if elected. He vowed to publish his full blueprint for public scrutiny at the right time. Akwuegbu expressed confidence that Nigeria can win its first-ever World Cup, citing the country's abundant talent.
As the NFF elections approach, Akwuegbu's focus on grassroots development and a league that can produce Super Eagles players has resonated with many. His vision for Nigerian football has sparked interest among fans and stakeholders. With his experience and qualifications, Akwuegbu is considered a strong contender for the NFF presidency.
