The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) has announced a new set of student leaders for the 2026/2027 academic session. Yusuf Bashir, a 400-level Law student, has emerged as the president of the undergraduate Students’ Union Caretaker Committee. Bashir and 13 other members of the reconstituted committee took the oath of office at a ceremony organised by the university management earlier this week. The inauguration marks the beginning of a new era for student leadership at UDUS.
At the postgraduate level, Nasiru Sani Danbatta has been elected as the president of the Postgraduate Students’ Representative Committee. Danbatta, a Pure and Applied Chemistry student, won the 2026 election with 37 votes, defeating his rival Abubakar Sani, a Petroleum Chemistry student, who secured 20 votes. The postgraduate committee’s inauguration was attended by several high-ranking university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Garba, and the University Librarian, Dr Kudirat Adegoke.
The inauguration ceremony for the postgraduate committee was also attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellors for Academics, Prof. Shehu Usman Gulumbe; Administration, Prof. M.M. Maishanu; and Research and Innovation, Prof. Aliyu Jibril. Other officials present included the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Prof. Abdulkadir Usman Junaidu; Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Umar Zayyanu Usman; and Deputy Dean, Prof. Asiya Bagudu. The university’s Legal Adviser, Malam Yusuf Musa Funtua, and Chief Security Officer, Wing Commander Abubakar Usman, were also in attendance.
Speaking on his agenda for postgraduate students, Danbatta has pledged to promote their welfare and address challenges affecting their timely graduation. He identified issues associated with thesis vetting and delayed presentations as major challenges that need to be resolved. Danbatta assured postgraduate students that he would prioritize resolving these issues to ensure they complete their programmes within the stipulated period.
Danbatta’s election as postgraduate president comes as a relief to many students who have been affected by delays in the completion of their programmes. His predecessor had faced criticism for not doing enough to address these challenges. With Danbatta at the helm, postgraduate students are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed and that they will be able to graduate on time.
