The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has officially opened a new R105 million Community Day Centre (CDC) in Ravensmead, South Africa. Located at 82 Florida Street, the state-of-the-art facility replaces the outdated local clinic, which could no longer cope with the area's growing population. The new centre is designed to serve an estimated 6 800 patients each month. The opening was attended by Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger, Director of Northern-Tygerberg Substructure Dr Michael Phillips, and Health Committee members.
The new CDC introduces an expanded range of medical services to streamline patient flow, reduce waiting times, and improve comfort. The services include emergency and minor ailments, maternal and child health, chronic and infectious disease management, specialised care, and youth services. The facility operates weekdays from 7am to 4.30pm and will be fully staffed by the existing healthcare team. This includes medical officers, professional nurses, clinical nurses, and administrative staff, ensuring seamless continuity of care.
Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger highlighted the importance of investing in modern infrastructure to enhance public healthcare delivery. She stated that patient well-being has been placed at the centre of the design, and with the expansion of services at this new clinic, a stronger, more accessible healthcare system is being built for all. The facility's location near public transport routes will also improve accessibility for residents.
The new CDC offers a wide array of services in one place, including emergency care, minor injuries, pharmacy services, antenatal and postnatal care, well-baby services, immunisations, and Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses. Additionally, residents can access long-term condition care, nutrition support, HIV and TB services, oral health and dental services, mental health counselling, cervical cancer screening, contraception, and reproductive health.
Dr. Michael Phillips, Director for the Northern and Tygerberg Sub-structure, praised the collaborative effort that brought the project to fruition after years of planning and negotiations. He expressed his satisfaction that the dream of the Ravensmead community and surrounding areas accessing care has been realised. The facility is expected to provide a pleasant experience for citizens as they journey through its corridors.
Operational Manager Sr. Izanne van Heerden expressed her team's enthusiasm for the new facility and urged local residents to take pride in the new infrastructure. She emphasised that this is more than just a new building; it is a place where the community can access the care and support they need in a comfortable environment. The community is encouraged to make this facility their own and work with the staff as they settle in.
Community leader and Health Committee Chairperson, Dawn Marcus, welcomed the new healthcare facility, pointing to it as a symbol of unity and progress. She expressed hope that the facility will provide high-quality, responsive care and that the Community Health Forum will continue to advocate for the community's needs. The new facility gives reason to be hopeful about the future and reminds people that when they come together with a common goal, positive change is possible.
