The UXi Eastern Cape International Rugby Institute was launched at the Fairview Sport Centre in Gqeberha, providing a structured development pathway for young rugby players. The institute's programme integrates elite rugby coaching, strength and conditioning, and academic qualifications to prepare student-athletes for careers on and off the field. This initiative aims to bridge the gap for school-leavers who miss university entry, offering a vital pathway to clubs, tertiary institutions, and provincial unions.
The institute follows a three-year development model, progressing through Discover, Develop, and Deploy stages. In the first year, Discover, students focus on developing fundamental skills. The second year, Develop, provides tactical and technical exposure, while the third year, Deploy, creates real-life opportunities and competitive exposure. This structured approach enables students to earn performance-based certifications and practical industry skills, supporting long-term careers in the sports and fitness sector.
David Manuel, the founder and director of the institute, leads the initiative. He has been the head coach of the Madibaz for several seasons and is a World Rugby level 3-qualified coach with 18 years of experience. Manuel's philosophy is centered on developing champion individuals, which he believes is key to winning championships. His goal is to develop players toward clubs, universities, provincial unions, and rugby-related careers.
The institute is based at the Fairview Sport Centre, offering students a dynamic environment focused on fitness, sport, and education. The campus provides dedicated training facilities, gym spaces, and modern education rooms, allowing students to combine classroom learning with practical experience. The facilities support both practical training and academic learning, featuring modern fitness equipment, dedicated strength and conditioning areas, and a spacious indoor sports hall.
Manuel highlighted the gap in the Eastern Cape rugby structure, where many players fall by the wayside due to not qualifying for university. The institute aims to catch these players, providing them with opportunities to develop and compete within the province and beyond. ECIRI creates pathways to play rugby for various unions across South Africa, gain valuable experience, and take the next step in their rugby careers at a higher level.
The UXi Sport rugby development and career programmes focus on individual player development, ensuring every participant reaches their highest level of performance. Upon successful completion of the Rugby Development Programme, student-athletes receive a performance-based certification, which can be added to their CV. This programme is built for individuals who can perform at a high physical and mental intensity and remain committed to their health, lifestyle, and performance goals.
Those interested in signing up can request a consultation and more information from a career coach via email: [email protected]. Alternatively, they can complete the application form on the Institute's website: www.uxisport.co.za. The institute offers a clear pathway into rugby unions, semi-professional teams, and university rugby programmes, providing students with a professional, high-performance environment where sport and education come together.
