The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has announced a strengthened enforcement posture against illegal importation and other regulatory breaches in Free Trade Zones (FTZs). According to NEPZA's Managing Director, Dr Olufemi Ogunyemi, strict compliance with regulations guiding transactions within the secured marketplace is mandatory for all Free Trade Zone operators. This move aims to protect the integrity of NEPZA's systems and ensure a level playing field.
Dr Ogunyemi stated that the operating licence is a legal instrument of obligation and foundation for maintaining a fair and transparent global marketplace. Effective immediately, NEPZA will intensify inspections, scrutinize documentation, and coordinate action with partner enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities. The Authority will also apply penalties provided under the law against operators found violating established procedures.
NEPZA's Managing Director warned operators against circumventing lawful import and export procedures, mis-declaration of goods, or moving containers through unauthorised channels. He emphasized that such conduct would be identified and punished accordingly. Dr Ogunyemi noted that illegal importation undermines lawful commerce, exposes communities to unregulated goods, and erodes public confidence.
The measures implemented by NEPZA are aimed at safeguarding public interest and ensuring a fair trade environment. Dr Ogunyemi assured that the Authority would handle regulatory issues with fairness, justice, and transparency. Operators found culpable will face the consequences of Nigerian law, while uninvolved entities will be allowed to continue their operations.
According to Dr Ogunyemi, the majority of operators conduct their businesses honestly, meet their obligations, and contribute meaningfully to a well-regulated trade environment. He stressed that the strengthened enforcement is directed at operators who violate regulations, rather than businesses operating within the law. The unlawful actions of a small minority must not be allowed to overshadow the achievements of the compliant majority.
Dr Ogunyemi urged operators and their associations to strengthen self-policing within the Free Trade Zones. He emphasized that the scheme continues to generate significant revenue for the government and that unlawful activities by a minority must not discredit its successes. The NEPZA boss encouraged operators to work together to maintain a fair and transparent trade environment.
