The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has announced stricter measures to enforce regulations in Free Trade Zones, aiming to protect the integrity of the system and ensure a fair trading environment. NEPZA's Managing Director, Olufemi Ogunyemi, stated this in Abuja, emphasizing the need for operators to comply with established procedures. The move targets illegal importation of containers and other breaches.
Ogunyemi warned that operating licences granted to Free Trade Zone operators carry obligations that must be respected. He stressed that the Authority will intensify enforcement against alleged illegal importation of containers into controlled areas, with immediate effect. This includes intensified inspections, closer scrutiny of documentation, and coordinated action with relevant agencies.
The measures aim to protect the integrity of NEPZA's systems, safeguard public interest, and maintain standards required by legitimate businesses. Operators found culpable will face consequences under Nigerian law, while businesses not involved in any violation will continue operations without disruption. He recognized the diligence and integrity of the majority of operators.
The NEPZA chief executive encouraged operators and zones to strengthen self-policing mechanisms. He disclosed that the Free Trade Zone scheme generates significant revenue for the government, making it necessary for the Federal Government, its agencies, and operators to work together to prevent activities that could undermine the sector's achievements.
