The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has been recognized by the Association of African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA) for its growing role in reshaping student financing. NELFUND received a Certificate of Observership at the sixth International Conference and Annual General Meeting of AAHEFA in Accra, Ghana. The conference brought together education financing agencies from 18 African countries to discuss the role of technology in transforming access to higher education financing.
The conference, themed "Digital Transformation in Higher Education Financing," focused on the sustainability of student financing schemes and the use of digital tools to make them more inclusive and resilient. NELFUND representatives Monalisa Dike and Stephanie Abughdyer presented Nigeria's experience during the countries' presentations, contributing to discussions on emerging challenges and innovations in higher education financing.
NELFUND's participation in the continental forum earned it formal recognition through the Certificate of Observership, presented to NELFUND Managing Director and Chief Executive, Akintunde Sawyerr. Sawyerr described the recognition as a significant milestone for NELFUND, saying it would strengthen the Fund's visibility and engagement within Africa's higher education financing community and on the global stage.
The recognition places NELFUND within a growing continental conversation over how African countries can deploy technology, data, and digital platforms to tackle persistent barriers to financing higher education. For NELFUND, the engagement provides an avenue to exchange knowledge and deepen partnerships with sister institutions as Nigeria continues efforts to expand access to education financing.
Sawyerr commended Monalisa Dike for her commitment to strengthening NELFUND's engagement and representation within the AAHEFA platform. He said the platform would provide NELFUND with opportunities to learn from peer institutions while contributing Nigeria's experience to the search for sustainable financing models for higher education across Africa.
NELFUND's participation in the conference underscored its commitment to building a financing system that is more inclusive, transparent, sustainable, and resilient, while leveraging technology to improve access for Nigerian students. The Fund's active participation in the continental forum demonstrates its dedication to improving access to education financing in Nigeria.
The Certificate of Observership is a testament to NELFUND's growing role in African higher education financing. As NELFUND continues to engage with peer institutions, it is expected to contribute to the development of sustainable financing models for higher education across the continent.
