The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) is set to unveil over 10,000 electric vehicles in October as part of a major transportation intervention aimed at reducing mobility costs and improving transportation across the North-East. This initiative was highlighted at the 13th meeting of the North-East Governors' Forum (NEGF), held in Maiduguri, Borno State, on October 3, 2026. The introduction of electric vehicles is expected to create new opportunities for employment, youth empowerment, and technical skills development.

The electric vehicles are expected to provide a more efficient and potentially more affordable means of transportation, particularly as governments across the region continue to invest in road infrastructure and urban development. The intervention is also expected to introduce a new dimension to transportation in the region. This move is in line with the NEDC's efforts to improve the quality of life of residents in the North-East.

In Yobe State, the intervention is expected to complement the ongoing transformation of urban infrastructure under the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni. The construction and rehabilitation of roads, pavement works, and the wider urban renewal programme are underway. The Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Dr Mohammed Goje, commended the NEDC initiative, saying it would have a significant impact when combined with the administration's ongoing investments in road infrastructure and urban renewal.

Dr Goje noted that the improvement of road networks and the ongoing transformation of urban centres under the Buni administration provide an enabling environment for modern transportation solutions to thrive. He said the combination of improved roads, urban renewal, and cleaner transportation would enhance mobility, support economic activities, and contribute to improving the quality of life of residents.

The electric-vehicle initiative is also expected to create a new ecosystem of economic activities around vehicle maintenance, charging infrastructure, battery management, electrical services, and fleet operations. This new ecosystem is expected to create opportunities for young people to acquire specialised skills in electric-vehicle technology and related services. The programme could position young people to participate in the emerging green economy.

The introduction of electric vehicles in the North-East is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the economy. The NEDC's initiative is in line with the region's efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions. The unveiling of the electric vehicles is expected to take place in October, with many residents eagerly awaiting the new transportation options.

The NEDC's transportation intervention is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life of residents in the North-East. The introduction of electric vehicles is expected to be a game-changer for transportation in the region, providing a more efficient, affordable, and sustainable means of getting around. With the support of state governments, the NEDC is poised to make a significant impact in the region.
