In a recent crackdown on nighttime traffic in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, authorities have arrested nearly 400 motorcyclists for failing to wear helmets. The operation, dubbed "Bouclier tête durcie" (Hardened Head Shield), was conducted by the Kadiogo Regional Police Department on October 23, 2026. The goal is to enforce helmet use and reduce accidents.

The operation targeted major intersections in Ouagadougou, with police stopping motorcyclists and checking for proper helmet use. At the Rond-point des Nations unies intersection, 34 motorcyclists were apprehended between 6 pm and 7:50 pm for not wearing helmets or wearing them incorrectly. Similar numbers were reported at other intersections, including Moogho Naaba (26), ASECNA (54), and Total Gounghin (37).

According to Abdoulaziz Yonli, Director of the Kadiogo Regional Police Department, the operation aims to address the lax attitude towards helmet use at night. Despite increased helmet use during the day, many motorcyclists tend to remove their helmets after dark, especially in peripheral neighborhoods. Yonli emphasized that accidents can occur at any time and that helmet use is crucial for safety.

The police department reported that many motorcyclists stopped during the operation claimed to have forgotten their helmets or were only traveling short distances. However, Yonli stressed that no journey, regardless of distance, justifies not wearing a helmet. He urged motorcyclists to make helmet use a habit, both day and night, and to encourage others to do the same.

One motorcyclist, Ousmane Kaboré, was stopped at the Rond-point des Nations Unies intersection. He admitted to forgetting his helmet and praised the police for their efforts to raise awareness about helmet use. Another motorcyclist, Abdoulaye Kodia, was stopped at the ASECNA intersection and also acknowledged the importance of wearing a helmet.

The police department plans to continue enforcing helmet use regulations and encouraging motorcyclists to make it a habit. Yonli called on the public to support the effort, urging individuals to encourage their families and friends to wear helmets. The goal is to make helmet use a permanent reflex, both day and night.

The operation "Bouclier tête durcie" is part of a broader effort to improve road safety in Burkina Faso. The police department aims to reduce accidents and promote a culture of safety among motorcyclists. With nearly 400 motorcyclists apprehended in just three hours, the operation has already made a significant impact.
