The Rivers State chapter of Nigeria's Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned against any attempt to manipulate the 2027 presidential election in the state. NDC chairman Success Jack made the declaration in response to comments by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Wike had claimed he and the defunct G-5 Governors stopped Peter Obi from winning Rivers in the 2023 election. Jack said the NDC is not intimidated by Wike's remarks.
Wike explained that the G-5 adopted a strategy to prevent former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from benefiting from the PDP's traditional strength in the South-South. The group encouraged Obi's support in some South-South states but decided against allowing him to win Rivers due to the political implications. Jack dismissed concerns that security agencies could intimidate voters, arguing that such a strategy would face resistance from the electorate.
Jack emphasized that voters would closely monitor the process at polling units and ensure that results are transmitted appropriately. He expressed doubt that any manipulation would be possible, citing changes in the electoral system since 2023. The NDC chairman said people would police the voting process to ensure transmission at polling units and local government collation centers.
The NDC has disclosed that consultations are underway for the constitution and inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given the latitude to nominate most principal officers of the campaign council.
According to a statement signed by the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Obi and Kwankwaso have held meetings with the party's National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and other leaders as part of the ongoing consultations. A comprehensive organogram for the campaign structure was prepared in August and shared with the two candidates for their input.
The party explained that Obi and Kwankwaso would nominate key officers, including the Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), campaign spokesman and deputy, Head of New Media, Finance Director, and Deputy Finance Director. The Finance Director and deputy would work with the party's National Treasurer to manage campaign funds, promoting transparency in the management of campaign finances.
The NDC's arrangement aims to ensure compliance with the reporting requirements of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party's leadership has given Obi and Kwankwaso a free hand to make nominations, with stakeholders across the country submitting nominations for the campaign council.
