General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has cautioned that the party risks undermining its own success if it replicates the mistakes that led to the downfall of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express, Kwetey urged the governing party to remain humble and recognize that its victory was largely a reflection of the public's rejection of the NPP rather than any inherent entitlement to power.
Kwetey emphasized that the NDC must prioritize discipline and accountability within its ranks, warning that party members who engage in wrongdoing will not be shielded from consequences. He stressed that the party's commitment to discipline will be tested by its willingness to punish its own members who err. According to Kwetey, the NDC's origins are rooted in executions, implying a higher standard of conduct is expected from its members.
The warning from Kwetey comes amid several controversies involving the NDC, including the alleged World Cup visa scandal at the National Sports Authority. The Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, was suspended and is being investigated by the police, although he has denied any wrongdoing. Additionally, the party faced criticism for its handling of sexual abuse allegations against Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai.
The NDC initially ordered Abdulai to withdraw from its Juaben constituency chairmanship contest following allegations, but later allowed him to proceed, citing fairness and the presumption of innocence. However, the party eventually directed him to step aside again as investigations into the allegations continued. Kwetey insisted that the NDC must uphold a higher standard of conduct and that wrongdoing will not be tolerated or covered up.
Kwetey made it clear that President John Mahama will not protect any party member involved in wrongdoing, stating, "And I can tell you, the president is not going to cover anyone." He also warned party members who are unwilling or unable to uphold the required standards that they will be replaced by others who can.
The NDC General Secretary emphasized that the party's approach to dealing with wrongdoing will set it apart from others, saying, "But the way you deal with them is what matters." He expressed confidence that the party will emerge stronger by upholding its values and standards.
Kwetey concluded by urging party members to remain committed to the NDC's core values, warning that self-seeking behavior and a lack of accountability can undermine the party's progress. He reiterated that the NDC will not sacrifice its principles to protect individuals who engage in wrongdoing.
