A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Buba Galadima, has disclosed that he is part of a seven-man opposition group working under the coordination of former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Galadima made the disclosure during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, stating that the group is focused on defeating President Bola Tinubu at the polls.
According to Galadima, the opposition group has been holding discussions and making progress as it prepares for the 2027 election. He mentioned that the group is working towards a common goal, which is to defeat Tinubu. However, Galadima did not identify the other six members of the group during the interview. The former Ekiti governor, Kayode Fayemi, is a founding member of the APC and has served as the party’s governor in Ekiti State between 2018 and 2022.
Fayemi has in recent months become increasingly critical of the direction of the APC. In May 2026, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, asked the former governor to leave the party if he no longer believed in its principles. Basiru also warned that the party could take disciplinary action against Fayemi over alleged anti-party activities. This warning followed comments by Fayemi in which he criticised the state of the ruling party and argued that the APC was losing some of the principles associated with its founding.
The NDC has emerged as one of the platforms being used by opposition figures seeking to build a stronger challenge to the APC. Galadima has previously spoken about the need for opposition politicians to work together against the ruling party. In May, he called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to join the NDC, arguing that the opposition needed greater unity ahead of the 2027 election.
Galadima also expressed confidence in Peter Obi during Thursday’s interview, stating that Obi could emerge victorious if the 2027 election is conducted freely and fairly. He discussed the role of young Nigerians in the coming election, saying the opposition was targeting voters between the ages of 18 and 35. According to him, the group was interested in mobilising young voters to participate actively in the electoral process.
Galadima raised concerns about the conduct of the 2027 election and questioned recent political activities involving President Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. He alleged that opposition politicians were facing coordinated attacks, while also accusing the government of taking steps that could weaken opposition parties.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the Presidency and APC have not publicly confirmed Galadima’s claims about the seven-man group.
