The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has set up a seven-member Electoral Committee and a three-member Elections Appeals Committee ahead of its October 15 elective congress in Abuja. This move is part of the federation's preparations for the election of its board for the 2026–2030 tenure. The committees were approved at the federation’s Extraordinary Congress held at the City Green Hotel, Yola, Adamawa State, on Friday.
The Electoral Committee is chaired by Dr Lanre Glover and comprises Sr Femi Olugbile, Alhaji Sani Fema, Engr Priscilla Ngozi Iroaganachi, Major General David Lubo, and Mallam Farouk Yarma as members, with Barrister Ichene Kalu serving as secretary. Mallam Farouk Yarma brings considerable experience in sports administration and electoral processes to the committee, having served as the pioneer chairman of the Gombe State Sports Commission.
The three-member Elections Appeals Committee is chaired by Barrister Emmanuel Okibe, with Ms Chichi Nwoko as a member and Mr Emmanuel Zira as secretary. The Extraordinary Congress also approved the timetable for the electoral process, which includes elections for the technical representative, players’ representative, and other affiliate bodies scheduled to take place in Abuja between October 7 and 14.
The main elective congress will hold in Abuja on October 15 at 10am. The constitution of the two committees marks a key step in the federation’s preparations for the elections, with the Electoral Committee expected to oversee the process while the Appeals Committee will handle any electoral disputes arising from it.
The NBBF president, Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida, had assured the congress that the elections would be free, fair, and transparent, while urging all those interested in elective positions to contest. He also called on aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with dignity and avoid derogatory or defamatory comments against one another.
The decisions were contained in the communique issued after the Extraordinary Congress and signed by Mr Felix Awogu, chairman of the Communique Drafting Committee. A total of 39 of the 44 delegates attended the congress, which was held to ensure a smooth electoral process.
The NBBF's move to constitute these committees demonstrates its commitment to conducting a credible and transparent election. The experience and expertise of the committee members are expected to contribute to the success of the electoral process.
