The Natal Indian Congress Legacy Foundation (NICLEF) has congratulated Justice Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for promoting peace and international law. President Cyril Ramaphosa and all South Africans join in celebrating her achievements. Justice Pillay's journey began in a modest working-class home in Clairwood, south of Durban, where she faced patriarchy and apartheid limitations.
Justice Pillay's university years were marked by resilience under apartheid, with segregated classes and graduations. Non-white students shared scarce resources, including textbooks, and were forced to transfer to other universities due to the Separate Universities Act of 1959. She petitioned the Minister of Justice directly to return to Natal and later became the first South African to obtain a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard Law School in 1988.
For 28 years as a lawyer in apartheid South Africa, Justice Pillay defended activists from various movements, exposed torture, and won the right for Robben Island prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, to have access to lawyers. She co-founded the Advice Desk for the Abused and a shelter for domestic violence victims and helped secure an equality clause in the Constitution.
President Mandela appointed Justice Pillay as the first non-white woman to the High Court of South Africa in 1995. She served as judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as judge of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
As Chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Justice Pillay demonstrated extraordinary moral courage. The Commission determined that war crimes were committed by both Hamas and Israel after the 7 October attacks and concluded that Israel had committed genocide during the Gaza war.
Despite facing criticism and pressure, Justice Pillay refused to back down from her findings. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for using starvation as a weapon of war and deliberately attacking civilians in Gaza.
The Natal Indian Congress Legacy Foundation celebrates Justice Pillay's historic achievement, which honours a daughter of Clairwood who turned patriarchy and apartheid on their heads. Her life reminds us to build a society where every person can develop their abilities and contribute fully to our nation and the world.
