The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to take immediate action to address the numerous challenges facing the state’s flagship hospital. The lawmakers made the call during a plenary session held on Wednesday at the Assembly complex in Lafia. The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, presented the motion following a special request by Hon. Hajarat Danyaro, representing Nasarawa Central constituency.

According to Hon. Danyaro, the hospital is in a deplorable state, with only one doctor and one nurse attending to as many as 30 patients at a time. She expressed concern about the lack of essential infrastructure, including functional water supply and sanitation facilities, forcing patients to provide their own water for use. The lawmaker lamented that despite efforts to draw the attention of the Hospitals Management Board to the situation, no meaningful action has been taken.

The Assembly has resolved to request the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board to immediately deploy more medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, to the hospital. The lawmakers also called on the government to upgrade the equipment and infrastructure of all major hospitals in the state to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. This move aims to address the healthcare needs of the people and prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Supporting the motion, other lawmakers, including Hon. Yusuf Aliyu Chunbaya and Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, emphasized that the Assembly would not fold its arms while public healthcare facilities in the state continue to deteriorate. They stressed the need for collective action to restore the hospital to its former glory and ensure that the people receive quality healthcare services.

The lawmakers also urged the government to consider redeploying some of the health professionals who have been on transfer from the area back to the hospital. They suggested that at least three doctors and 10 nurses should be deployed to provide adequate healthcare services to the people. The Assembly’s intervention is aimed at addressing the healthcare crisis and ensuring that the hospital provides quality services to the people.

In his closing remarks, the Speaker of the House directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mista Ibrahim Abdulazeez Musa, to forward the resolution to Governor Abdullahi Sule for immediate action. The governor is expected to take urgent steps to address the healthcare crisis and restore the hospital to its former glory. The Assembly’s move is a welcome development, and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the governor’s response.

The Nasarawa State Assembly’s intervention is a significant step towards addressing the healthcare challenges facing the state.
