The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has started the North-East phase of its nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour. The tour began with an inspection of the Jamare-Azare and Potiskum-Maiduguri roads in Bauchi State. NANS President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye, led a high-powered delegation comprising NANS, the National Association of University Students (NAUS), the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), and the National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES).
The inspected roads link three major institutions: Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State University, and Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare. These roads are of strategic importance to students who commute daily to their campuses. According to Akinteye, the delegation assessed the quality of the roads and their impact on the movement of students within the axis.
Akinteye expressed satisfaction with the quality of the inspected projects, stating that they meet commendable standards. He commended the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for his foresight and commitment to infrastructural development that serves Nigerian students and commuters. The Minister's efforts have positively impacted students in the region.
The NANS President also acknowledged the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his investments in infrastructural development. Akinteye emphasized that the quality and accessibility of roads leading to institutions remain a matter of direct concern for students, who commute daily along these routes to their campuses.
As part of its nationwide tour, NANS will continue to assess federal road projects leading to tertiary institutions, examining their impact on students' daily movement and drawing attention to areas requiring improvement. The student body aims to provide unbiased commendations where projects meet required standards and make recommendations where gaps are identified.
The Nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour will continue across other parts of the country, after which an official report and recommendations will be presented. NANS remains committed to advocating for projects and policies that improve students' welfare and create a more conducive environment for learning.
Through this tour, NANS and its sister student bodies aim to ensure that the nation's road infrastructure serves the needs of students and commuters.
