The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has started the North-East phase of its nationwide assessment of federal road projects. The focus is on routes connecting tertiary institutions across the region. NANS, along with other student bodies, inspected the Jamare-Azare Road and Potiskum-Maiduguri Road in Bauchi State. This inspection is part of the ongoing Nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour.
The inspection was led by NANS President, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye. He stated that the roads are crucial as they provide access to major tertiary institutions in the area. These institutions include the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State University, and Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare. Students rely on these roads daily to commute to their campuses.
During the inspection, the delegation evaluated the quality of the roads and their impact on transportation and movement within the axis. Afeez reported that the projects inspected were completed and met commendable quality standards. The student body commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for his commitment to infrastructural development.
Afeez also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for investments in infrastructural development. He emphasized that the quality and accessibility of roads leading to tertiary institutions are important to students due to their daily journeys between residence and campuses. The assessment aims to identify gaps in federal road projects and make recommendations for improvements.
The Nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour is designed to provide students with an opportunity to assess infrastructure that directly affects their welfare and academic activities. The leadership of NANS and its sister student organizations will continue to assess federal road projects leading to tertiary institutions and examine their impact on students' daily movement.
The student body plans to compile an official report containing observations and recommendations for presentation to relevant authorities. This initiative is part of NANS' commitment to advocating projects and policies capable of improving students' welfare and creating a more conducive environment for learning. The tour will continue across other parts of the country.
At the end of the exercise, NANS will present its findings to relevant authorities. The association aims to ensure that the concerns of students are addressed and that infrastructural development serves the needs of Nigerian students and commuters.
