The Nandom Municipal Assembly in Ghana's Upper West Region has approved GH¢496,520 in financial and material support for 89 persons with disabilities under the October 2026 disbursement of the Disability Fund. This initiative aims to promote economic independence, dignity, and social inclusion among persons with disabilities. The support will help beneficiaries establish and expand businesses, access healthcare and education, acquire assistive devices, and address other essential needs.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Anthony Ziniel, emphasized that the intervention is an investment in the future and wellbeing of beneficiaries. He stated that the initiative goes beyond distributing money and materials, but rather creates opportunities, reduces economic hardship, and ensures equal opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in the development of the municipality.
A total of GH¢390,000 has been earmarked for 72 beneficiaries to support income-generating activities, making it the largest component of the disbursement. Additionally, GH¢16,600 has been allocated to five beneficiaries for medication, while GH¢14,600 has been allocated to four people for educational purposes. Other beneficiaries will receive support for organisational development, care support, and assistive devices.
Anthony Ziniel urged beneficiaries to invest the funds responsibly and manage them sustainably to ensure returns. He cautioned that the success of the programme depends on the commitment, honesty, and responsible actions of the beneficiaries. The Assembly will monitor the utilisation of the support to ensure accountability and assess its impact.
The MCE emphasised that monitoring is necessary to ensure the resources reach the intended beneficiaries and achieve their intended objectives. He called on stakeholders, including families, traditional authorities, and educational institutions, to help eliminate discrimination and create an environment where persons with disabilities can participate fully in community development.
The beneficiaries expressed joy at the gesture and assured that they would utilise the funds for the right purposes. The MCE said the ultimate measure of the intervention would not be the amount disbursed but the tangible improvements it brings to the lives of beneficiaries and their families. He encouraged the beneficiaries to remain active contributors to the development of their communities.
The disbursement ceremony took place at the Nandom Municipal Assembly, where the beneficiaries received their individual support. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of persons with disabilities in the municipality, promoting economic independence and social inclusion.
