The National Organiser of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has urged the government to dismiss officials responsible for preventing narcotics trafficking. At the meeting, the President was informed that 10 people, including four Customs Division officers, had been detained while investigations continued. He subsequently directed an inter-agency task force to develop measures to strengthen controls against narcotics trafficking. However, Nana Boakye believes that convening the meeting was not enough.
Nana Boakye questioned why the government had not taken immediate action against officials he believes had failed to perform their duties. He noted that in just four days, there were close to five illicit drug-related matters. "God, this is a huge international embarrassment," Nana Boakye said. He argued that officials whose responsibilities included preventing the trafficking of narcotics should face consequences.
Nana Boakye criticised President Mahama over what he described as a failure to follow through on his earlier promise to take firm action against officials found responsible for the situation. He said, "His Excellency the President spoke tough. He was going to crack the whip today. He cannot crack the whip. He is rather pampering the activities of illicit drugs." Nana Boakye believes that several officials should already have been removed from office over the recent incidents.
According to Nana Boakye, close to about nine officials should have been sacked by now, but the President is "pampering them". He emphasised that the officials have relaxed on their duties and must be sacked.
