Naija Feminists Media, with support from Global Activists Network, recently trained 52 female students from Apo Secondary School in Abuja on child marriage, girls' rights, and education. This initiative marked the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, focusing on ending child marriage and protecting girls' futures. The training aimed to equip students with knowledge of the risks associated with early marriage and strategies for prevention.

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, highlights the rights, challenges, and opportunities of girls worldwide. The 2026 theme, "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls' Rights," calls for stronger action to protect girls from harmful practices and expand their access to education and personal development opportunities. During the training, students explored the causes and consequences of child marriage, particularly its implications for girls' education and future prospects.

Facilitators encouraged students to understand their rights, recognize situations that could expose them to harm, and seek help when necessary. The training emphasized speaking up against child marriage and other forms of abuse, introducing participants to relevant institutions and reporting channels for abuse cases. Students learned to seek assistance from trusted adults and authorities when faced with threats.

The program addressed digital and social media safety, providing practical guidance on responsible online platform use. Students learned to protect personal information, exercise caution with strangers, and evaluate information before consuming or distributing it. Facilitators highlighted the positive uses of digital platforms, including accessing educational resources and exploring opportunities for learning and personal growth.

The interactive session allowed students to ask questions, contribute to discussions, and share perspectives on the issues raised. As part of the initiative, over 50 writing materials were distributed to support learning and encourage continued participation in school. The materials included guidance on contacting relevant authorities to report predators.

The initiative's emphasis on youth voices reflects the need to recognize girls as active participants in conversations and decisions affecting their lives. Naija Feminists Media aims to create safe spaces where girls can understand their rights, discuss challenges, and access reliable information. Education was highlighted as a critical tool for empowerment, particularly in communities where harmful social practices limit girls' choices and opportunities.

Through the Youth Voices Against Child Marriage initiative, Naija Feminists Media and Global Activists Network seek to strengthen awareness of girls' rights and encourage young people to challenge practices threatening their wellbeing and development. The initiative reinforces a central message: every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, realize her potential, and determine her future.
