A Nigerian Air Force helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing on a farmland in Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday. The incident occurred at Utur Tse-Igboji, Bar Council Ward, along Welfare Quarter, Makurdi. According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter made the emergency landing due to a technical fault. Fortunately, all officers on board were reported to be alive.

The helicopter, which was on a mission to provide close air support to surface forces during an operation targeting suspected kidnappers in the Ogbadigbo area of Benue State, had successfully disrupted the activities of the criminal elements. The operation was conducted near the Enugu–Benue boundary. After completing its mission, the pilot exercised his professional discretion to execute a precautionary landing approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield.

The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that the helicopter was returning from an operation along the Enugu–Benue boundary. In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF stated that the helicopter had successfully provided close air support to surface forces during the operation. The statement also assured that the NAF remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal elements and protecting communities through coordinated air and ground operations.

The incident was witnessed by locals who rushed to the scene to support the officers on board. An eyewitness described the scene, saying, "We all rushed to the scene to support the officers on board, and to the glory of God, they all came out alive. It would have been a double tragedy if the helicopter had crashed into our homes." The eyewitness expressed relief that the incident did not result in any fatalities.

The Nigerian Air Force has reiterated its commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of action and supporting efforts to restore safety and security to affected communities. According to the statement, the successful outcome of the operation underscores the NAF's continued resolve to provide close air support to surface forces and protect communities. The NAF also assured that the helicopter has returned to base.

The forced landing of the NAF helicopter in Makurdi has raised concerns about the safety of military operations in the region. However, the incident has also highlighted the professionalism of the pilot, who exercised his discretion to execute a precautionary landing, preventing a potential crash. The NAF has not disclosed the exact cause of the technical fault that led to the forced landing.

The incident is the latest in a series of military operations conducted by the NAF in the region. The NAF has been actively involved in efforts to combat kidnapping and other forms of banditry in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria.
