Former Governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has emphasized that his free medical outreach and surgeries are driven by compassion and a desire to improve the well-being of the people, rather than politics. According to him, he has remained committed to assisting the less privileged through various interventions in the last 25 years. This initiative is part of the Gateway Front Foundation's (GFF) 25th anniversary celebrations.
The 14-day Free Medical Outreach, Training and Surgical Medical Mission, organised by the GFF in partnership with Sharing Hope Medical Mission (USA) and Sharing Hope and Care Foundation, offers a range of medical services. These include major and minor surgeries, gynaecology surgeries, eye surgeries with free eyeglasses, orthopaedic care, plastic surgeries, free medical supplies, and general medical consultations. The programme aims to reach vulnerable residents who cannot afford quality healthcare.
The medical mission is being conducted on two levels: a free surgical programme at the Redeemer’s Health Village within Redemption Camp, and a free medical outreach across 13 locations. Prior to the outreach, prescreening exercises were conducted across 12 centres to identify patients requiring surgical interventions. So far, 754 patients have been scheduled for surgery, with the prescreening exercise still ongoing.
The programme also aims to build local medical capacity through training. Medical personnel from the United States are participating in the programme, including doctors, nurses, and other paramedics. They are primarily attending to patients at the surgical centre. The Gateway Front Foundation is partnering with Sharing Hope Medical Mission, USA, and the Redeemer’s Health Village to ensure the success of the programme.
Dr. Emeka Nyawo, a trauma surgeon with the United States-based Sharing Hope Medical Mission, commended GFF for its contributions to healthcare delivery and community development in Ogun State. He said the mission provides free medical services to underserved communities across Africa, with a focus on surgical interventions, medical education, and capacity building for healthcare professionals.
One of the beneficiaries of the free medical outreach, Orekoya Oluwaseun, lauded the organisers of the outreach, saying it will go a long way in solving the financial burden associated with people accessing quality healthcare across the Senatorial District. The medical team comprises professionals equipped to attend to patients and provide the necessary treatments while sharing their expertise with local healthcare workers.
The free medical outreach and surgeries are part of GFF's 25th anniversary celebrations, which began in 2001. The foundation's efforts have been focused on providing accessible healthcare to the people, and the current initiative is expected to surpass the achievements of previous medical missions organised by Sharing Hope International.
