MTN Ghana has made a significant shift in its corporate strategy, placing sustainability at the forefront of its Ambition 2030 plan. This move aims to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040, demonstrating the company's commitment to environmental responsibility. According to Ms Sheila Sorinye, Community Relations Advisor at MTN Ghana, sustainability is no longer just a component of their strategy but a way of life that seeks to leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
As part of its sustainability efforts, MTN Ghana is implementing several initiatives across four pillars: Doing for People, Doing for Growth, Doing it Right, and Doing for Planet. One notable initiative under the Doing for Planet pillar involves transitioning cell sites from diesel to solar power, significantly reducing carbon emissions. This transition is a crucial step towards achieving the company's Net Zero target by 2040.
MTN Ghana's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations to its supply chain. The company requires its suppliers to adopt sustainable sourcing practices in all their operations. Internally, MTN Ghana has implemented various eco-friendly measures at its Accra office, including the installation of solar panels, waste segregation for recycling, sensor lights in washrooms, and rainwater harvesting for watering plants.
The company's dedication to sustainability is not limited to a single month or campaign but has become an integral part of its culture. This was evident during Sustainability August, where MTN Ghana engaged in recycling and other environmentally friendly activities. Ms Sorinye emphasized that sustainability affects everyone and encouraged stakeholders, particularly the media in the Volta Region, to join the journey by educating the public on responsible lifestyles and environmental protection.
MTN Ghana recently held a Volta Regional Media and Stakeholders Engagement in Ho, which provided a platform for stakeholders to share feedback, express views, and make recommendations to improve the company's services and community relationships. The engagement also allowed MTN Ghana to update stakeholders on its achievements, ongoing initiatives, and future plans, including network infrastructure investments and support for the government's agenda through tax payments and digital skills training.
During the engagement, Ms Efua Falconer, Acting Senior Manager, Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, urged the media to sensitize the public about the company's interventions, such as the Bright Scholarship program and the Heroes of Change initiative. These initiatives aim to support brilliant but needy students and recognize individuals transforming lives in communities across the Volta Region.
MTN Ghana expressed gratitude to the people of the Volta Region for their support over the past three decades. The company reiterated its promise to continue improving its network, expanding digital opportunities, protecting customer trust, and investing in interventions that matter to the local community. Key points from the engagement include MTN Ghana's commitment to sustainability, its various initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, and its call for stakeholders to join the journey towards a more sustainable future.
