Morocco's legislative elections, held on Wednesday, have seen the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) emerge as the leading party, securing 97 parliamentary seats. This significant lead puts PAM 31 seats ahead of its closest competitor, the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which topped the previous elections. The results, announced by Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, mark a notable shift in the country's political landscape.

The Independence Party, a member of the outgoing government's coalition, secured third place with 65 seats. Meanwhile, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), despite facing a significant setback from its previous tally of 13 seats to now 54 seats, managed to lead the opposition parties. This outcome represents a considerable recovery for PJD, which had previously suffered a substantial loss.

Other parties also made significant gains in the elections. The Popular Movement secured 29 seats, followed by the Socialist Union of Popular Forces with 26 seats, and the Party of Progress and Socialism with 19 seats. Additionally, the Constitutional Union obtained 17 seats, while the Social Movement and the Left-Wing Alliance each secured 8 seats.

Smaller parties also participated in the elections, with the Democratic Forces Front and the Equity Party each obtaining 2 seats, and the New Democrats and the Unity and Democracy parties securing 1 seat each. These results reflect a diverse political landscape, with various parties contributing to the parliamentary composition.

A total of 395 seats in the House of Representatives were contested in these elections, with a voter turnout of 38.08%. This translates to approximately 6 million voters out of 15.8 million registered voters casting their ballots. Notably, this participation rate is lower than in the previous two elections, which saw turnout rates of 50.86% in 2021 and 42.27% in 2016.

The PAM's significant lead in the elections positions it as a major force in the new parliament. However, the final composition of the parliament and the implications of these results for the country's governance remain to be seen. Further analysis and reactions from various political parties and stakeholders will be crucial in understanding the full impact of these election outcomes.

As Morocco navigates its political future, the newly elected representatives will play a critical role in shaping the country's policies and direction. The relatively low voter turnout may also prompt discussions on increasing political engagement and participation in the electoral process.
