This conference coincides with the International Pharmacists' Day, celebrated on September 25th every year. MPharma aims to highlight the importance of independent pharmacies as a fundamental part of the healthcare system.
The conference was opened by Dr. Hassnaa Mمون, CEO of MPharma, who emphasized that the event takes place in a critical period for the profession in Morocco. She pointed out that the sector faces structural challenges, including the new decree on drug pricing, which was issued without considering proposals from pharmacists or providing measures to mitigate its financial impact. This situation threatens the sustainability of thousands of pharmacies.
Dr. Mمون also warned about attempts to liberalize the capital of pharmacies and open the field to investment chains, stressing the historical and crucial role of Moroccan pharmacists. She recalled the 9 April protest, which led to the freezing of these proposals and the protection of the profession's identity and independence. MPharma is advocating for a new economic model that supports independent pharmacies and expands pharmacists' roles.
The conference program included scientific workshops and sessions led by medical and academic professionals. The main symposium discussed the liberalization of capital and the decree on drug pricing, focusing on the future of Moroccan pharmacies. The event provided a platform for pharmacists and healthcare professionals to exchange ideas and find solutions to the challenges facing the sector.
At the end of the conference, MPharma issued a set of recommendations, including preserving independent pharmacies, adopting measures to support pharmacies in coping with drug price reductions, and creating a new economic model that goes beyond the profit margin of drugs. The association also called for expanding pharmacists' roles, adopting a participatory approach with pharmacists' representatives, and conducting regional council elections.
MPharma was established in 2010 and has branches across Morocco. The association aims to promote the pharmacy profession, support pharmacists scientifically, professionally, and socially, and contribute to continuous training. In 2018, MPharma launched an economic interest group, "Cellula Honeycomb," to develop pharmaceutical management and economy.
The recommendations issued by the conference also included tightening control over the sale of drugs outside the legal framework, stopping the prosecution of pharmacists under the 1922 decree, and the need to amend it. MPharma's efforts focus on strengthening the role of independent pharmacies in public health and promoting a more comprehensive approach to healthcare.
