Morocco has made significant strides in its travel and tourism sector, according to the World Economic Forum's (WEF) 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI). The country recorded a 5.5% increase in its TTDI score between 2024 and 2026, placing it among the world's fastest-improving tourism economies. This improvement allowed Morocco to break into the top 10 economies that recorded the strongest progress in the latest edition of the index.
Morocco climbed seven positions to rank 70th out of 110 economies assessed in the 2026 TTDI, with a score of 3.84 out of seven. This progress was notable against a global average increase of around 2.1%. The WEF reported that 101 of the 110 economies included in the 2026 index, or 92%, improved their scores between 2024 and 2026. The improvement in Morocco's score was driven by advancements in various areas, including cultural resources, tourism services and infrastructure, and tourism demand sustainability.
The WEF situated the fastest gains in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Average TTDI scores increased by 3.6% in Asia-Pacific and 2.5% in MENA between 2024 and 2026. In the MENA region, improvements in cultural resources, tourism services and infrastructure, and tourism demand sustainability were identified as important areas of progress.
Morocco's 5.5% improvement placed it eighth among the 10 economies with the largest increases in TTDI scores during the 2024-2026 period. Albania recorded the largest improvement, with its score increasing by 7%, followed by Vietnam at 6.3%, and Laos at 6.1%. Other countries that recorded increases of more than 5% included Qatar, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The TTDI report assesses 110 economies across 17 pillars covering areas including tourism infrastructure and services, air transport infrastructure, cultural and natural resources, ICT readiness, price competitiveness, safety and security, and the sustainability of tourism demand. The assessment does not rank countries based on tourist arrivals, tourism revenues, or visitor spending. Instead, it measures the conditions and policies that support the sustainable and resilient development of travel and tourism.
