Morocco has continued to import wheat from France, with recent data showing that the port of Rouen loaded 347,825 tons of soft wheat for Morocco. The shipments were spread across four weekly installments, starting with 200,115 tons in the first week of October, followed by 54,510 tons, 60,200 tons, and 33,000 tons in subsequent weeks. This development comes as Morocco's local wheat production is estimated to have reached 4.4 million tons.
Despite the improved national production, which is double that of the previous season, the collected quantities of local wheat remain limited compared to the needs of industrial mills. According to data from "Le Desk," the collected quantities by approved actors did not exceed 6 million quintals, equivalent to 600,000 tons, against a target of 15 to 20 million quintals. This collected amount covers only about 12% of the annual needs of industrial mills.
The difference between the total production and the collected quantities reflects the limited amount that actually reached the approved collection channels. The available data do not provide a detailed breakdown of the remaining production and its distribution among various uses and stocks. In June 2026, Morocco had stopped importing soft wheat to prioritize the marketing of national production and support farmers.
However, due to the limited collected quantities, the National Office for Grains and Legumes reactivated the support system for importing soft wheat for shipments loaded between September 16 and December 31, 2026. The authorities also increased the support value to 44.48 dirhams per quintal in October, up from 20.8 dirhams in September, to reduce the difference between the cost of imported wheat and its selling price to mills.
The price of imported soft wheat in the international market ranged between 320 and 325 dirhams per quintal, while its selling price to mills was fixed at 270 dirhams, making public support an essential element in encouraging importers to continue purchasing. As of now, Morocco's national wheat stocks stand at around 600,000 tons, enough to cover about two months of consumption.
Despite the continued arrival of French shipments, French industry insiders expect a decline in soft wheat exports to Morocco during the 2026-2027 agricultural season. According to estimates presented during Moroccan-French grain meetings in Casablanca in October, French sales may reach 2.5 million tons during the period from September 2026 to May 2027, down from 3.5 million tons in the previous season.
Morocco's total imports of soft wheat are expected to reach around 4.2 million tons during the current season, down from about 5 million tons in the previous season. France remains Morocco's primary supplier in this field, although there is a trend towards diversifying supply sources, particularly from Germany and other European countries, as well as potential shipments from Argentina.
