Moroccan Parliament Speaker Ahmed Touizi stated that the Western Sahara issue has entered a new phase following recent developments in the United Nations Security Council. He noted that the UNSC's decision not to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) marks a significant shift in international handling of the regional conflict. This change opens a new chapter focused on consolidating national sovereignty and preserving gains.

Touizi made these remarks during the opening of a joint session of the Moroccan Parliament dedicated to the latest developments in the national issue and the celebration of the first anniversary of the Unity Day. He highlighted that the UNSC's decision follows UN Resolution 2797 of 2025, which underscores the pivotal role of Morocco's autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty. The initiative has gained credibility and is now considered a realistic foundation for resolving the conflict.

The expiration of MINURSO's mandate, which lasted 35 years, necessitates a series of actions, including the withdrawal of the mission from the southern regions, the departure of its personnel, and the removal of its equipment. This was stated in a communiqué from the Royal Palace. The development signifies a substantial change in the international community's approach to the Western Sahara issue.

Touizi also drew attention to the plight of detainees in Tindouf camps, who are deprived of basic rights such as freedom of choice, movement, travel, and identity. He called on the international community to assume its responsibility in ending their suffering. The situation in these camps has been a longstanding concern for human rights organizations.

The Moroccan Parliament Speaker emphasized that the progress made in the national issue is a result of the King's vision and a consistent diplomatic approach. He stressed that the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty has become a cornerstone for a credible and realistic solution to the conflict. This initiative enjoys broad support from the international community.

Touizi reiterated that Morocco's territorial integrity is not a subject for negotiation or compromise. He called for sustained national mobilization and conversion of the consensus on the issue into continuous institutional action through legislation, oversight, and parliamentary diplomacy. This approach aims to support the development process in the southern regions and enhance their economic, social, and cultural influence.

The developments in the Western Sahara issue come at a critical juncture, with Morocco seeking to strengthen its presence in the region. The Moroccan government's efforts focus on enhancing the socio-economic conditions in the southern regions and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community continues to watch the situation closely, with many urging a lasting solution.
