The 153rd International Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly kicked off on Monday in Arusha, Tanzania, with the participation of representatives from parliaments around the world, including Morocco. The IPU Assembly will discuss strategies for promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and empowering them, as well as review reports from the IPU's standing committees. The assembly will also witness the election of a new IPU president for a three-year term, succeeding Tanzania's Tolela Akson, whose term ends this month. The IPU, founded in 1889, is the global organization of national parliaments, currently comprising 183 member parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies.
The Moroccan delegation's participation in the assembly is part of Morocco's diplomatic efforts to promote its interests and engage in international parliamentary cooperation. The assembly will also feature a series of meetings and workshops on current issues, including military artificial intelligence, extractive industries oversight, maritime security in conflict times, and healthy food in the context of climate change.
During the assembly, Ould Errachid held talks with the presidents of parliaments from several countries. The discussions focused on ways to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and promote peace and sustainable development. The IPU Assembly will adopt a decision on parliamentary strategies to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and empower them, as well as a final document related to the general theme of the discussion.
The assembly will also feature the participation of various IPU bodies, including its governing council, standing committees, and the Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians. The IPU's work is guided by its commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and sustainable development through parliamentary cooperation and dialogue.
The 153rd IPU Assembly is an important event for Morocco, as it provides an opportunity for the country's parliamentary delegation to engage with international partners and promote Morocco's interests. The assembly will conclude on October 9, with the adoption of a final document and decisions on the issues discussed during the assembly.
