The Crédit Agricole du Maroc has made financing date palm production a strategic priority, offering financial solutions to small farmers and sector stakeholders. This initiative was announced during the 15th International Date Fair in Morocco, held in Erfoud from October 28, 2026. The bank's efforts aim to support the sector, with national date production expected to reach 177,000 tons in the 2026-2027 season, an 11% increase from the previous year.
The Crédit Agricole du Maroc's offerings cover various stages of date palm production, from planting and farm equipment to production, processing, and marketing. The bank also provides financing for irrigation and agricultural mechanization equipment, as well as facilities for transitioning to clean energy. This comprehensive approach seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the date palm sector.
According to Hanane Ajjil, Director of the Crédit Agricole du Maroc's office and General Manager of "Financement Agricole," the bank's support extends beyond modern farms to small holdings, including those primarily producing for family consumption. This support is crucial, given the challenges small date palm producers face in accessing bank financing due to a lack of collateral.
To address this issue, "Financement Agricole" offers tailored loans based on the financial capacity and needs of small producers, utilizing a state-backed guarantee fund that covers 60% of the financing portfolio. This mechanism enables farmers to finance the purchase of palm seedlings, agricultural machinery, and equipment, including drip irrigation systems.
The Crédit Agricole du Maroc also supports post-production activities, financing projects for date processing, valuation, and marketing. This aims to increase the value added to local products and improve the profitability of various stages of the supply chain, ultimately enhancing the sector's competitiveness.
The bank's efforts focus on promoting sustainable practices, financing investments related to irrigation, mechanization, and green transition. This includes financing solar-powered irrigation systems, which provide an alternative to traditional diesel-powered pumps, reducing production costs and improving energy efficiency.
The date palm sector plays a significant role in Morocco's economy and social landscape, generating a value added of over MAD 3 billion and providing more than 3.4 million working days annually. Supporting and developing this sector is essential for the sustainability of the industry, which directly or indirectly benefits nearly two million people.
