The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has taken steps to bolster Ebola prevention efforts in Ituri Province by equipping the Congolese National Police (PNC) with essential protection gear. On October 29, MONUSCO's Police Component (UNPOL) handed over the equipment to the PNC in Bunia. This donation aims to enhance the safety of police officers involved in combating the epidemic and reduce the risk of virus transmission within security forces and local communities.

As the Ebola outbreak persists in Ituri Province, police officers play a vital role in response efforts, including monitoring population movements, enforcing preventive measures, and providing security for healthcare teams. However, their duties expose them to the risk of infection. To mitigate this risk, MONUSCO provided 500 FFP2/N95 protective masks, 20 infrared thermometers, 100 units of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and 125 units of disinfectant liquid soap, among other equipment. These supplies will benefit five PNC structures in the region.

The equipment donation is part of a broader effort to strengthen the operational capacity of PNC units, particularly in managing checkpoints and supporting response operations, in coordination with health authorities. MONUSCO's initiative also includes awareness-raising materials, such as 700 leaflets and 100 posters, to educate police officers and the public on Ebola prevention measures. By enhancing the protection of police officers, MONUSCO aims to ensure the effective implementation of security and health response strategies.

Ituri Provincial Commissioner of the Congolese National Police, Ngoy Sengelwa, expressed his gratitude to MONUSCO for its support in strengthening police protection. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding police personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of the population. The provincial commissioner also reported an increase in Ebola cases in the Bankoko neighborhood of Bunia and urged commanders to ensure proper use of the equipment and adherence to preventive measures.

MONUSCO's support for the Congolese National Police extends beyond emergency health responses. The organization regularly provides training, technical advice, and awareness-raising activities to enhance police capabilities. This cooperation includes joint patrols, initiatives to strengthen police-community relations, and efforts to prevent and combat sexual and gender-based violence. Through these interventions, MONUSCO continues to support the PNC in carrying out its security responsibilities.

The Ebola outbreak in Ituri Province highlights the need for sustained efforts to prevent and control the spread of the virus. MONUSCO's equipment donation and capacity-building initiatives are critical components of the response strategy. By strengthening the protection of police officers and supporting response operations, MONUSCO contributes to the overall health and security response in the region.

The partnership between MONUSCO and the Congolese National Police demonstrates the importance of collaboration in addressing health and security challenges. As the situation in Ituri Province continues to evolve, MONUSCO's support for the PNC will remain crucial in preventing the spread of Ebola and promoting stability in the region.
