Nigeria's Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has urged governments, development partners, philanthropists, and the private sector to invest more in education globally. He made this call during Nigeria's opening remarks at the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Multiply Possibility financing campaign in New York. The event was co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy. Alausa emphasized that education and skills development are critical for harnessing the potential of Nigeria's young population and building resilient economies.
Alausa highlighted that education and skills are vital investments for any country, particularly in harnessing the potential of its young population and building resilient economies with a sustainable future. He noted that Nigeria's advocacy for increased global investment in education is backed by concrete measures at home. These measures include efforts to expand access, reduce cost barriers, strengthen skills development, and leverage digital technology. These initiatives are part of the broader agenda for macro-fiscal stability and inclusive economic growth under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Nigeria has made domestic financing commitments for education through 2030, incorporating updated Federal Government expenditure projections and financing commitments at the state level. This approach reflects the realities of Nigeria's federal structure and the government's determination to mobilize resources for education at every level. Alausa noted that Nigeria's commitment is part of a wider effort by GPE partner countries, with 50 countries collectively committing more than $400 billion in domestic financing for education through 2030.
Alausa stressed that domestic efforts must be matched by effective international partnerships. He described the GPE as an important platform for bringing governments and development partners together around nationally determined priorities. The partnership can help countries translate national ambitions into stronger education systems and improved outcomes for children. Alausa called on governments, development partners, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector to sustain the momentum generated by the Multiply Possibility campaign.
The Minister urged stakeholders to support the forthcoming High-Level Financing Event. He emphasized that the focus should ultimately be on ensuring that political commitments and financial resources translate into tangible improvements in classrooms. Alausa said that the focus must be on translating political commitments and resources into measurable improvements in classrooms and meaningful opportunities for children and young people.
Alausa reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to sustaining reforms and partnerships aimed at strengthening the education sector and expanding opportunities for children and young people. He assured stakeholders that education would remain a central priority under the Tinubu administration's Renewed Hope Agenda. The Federal Government would continue to expand access, strengthen learning and skills development, harness digital opportunities, and equip learners to contribute to a more prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.
The Minister's call for stronger global investment in education aligns with the country's efforts to prioritize education and skills development. By co-hosting the GPE Multiply Possibility financing campaign, Nigeria and Italy aim to generate support for education initiatives globally.
