Meatco, a major meat processing company in Namibia, is expecting to resume slaughtering operations later this month. According to Albertus Aochamub, Meatco's interim CEO, the company will restart slaughtering around 23 October. This follows a mandatory 30-day quarantine period for animals affected by the recent foot and mouth disease outbreak. The quarantine period is a requirement for animals to be cleared for slaughter.
The foot and mouth disease outbreak led to restrictions on meat exports, particularly to the European Union. However, the EU has clarified that meat products certified before 23 September can still enter the European market for 90 days. Aochamub stated that exports might resume to restricted markets from areas outside the outbreak area. Alternatively, restrictions could remain in the EU and other markets, while exports resume to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Meatco's operations have been impacted by the outbreak, but the company is reviewing its processes as the situation develops. Aochamub noted that it is too early to determine the longer-term impact on the company. Meatco has its own animals, as well as those belonging to subcontractors, which will enable the company to remain operational after the 30-day quarantine period.
Producers can continue supplying feedlots under conditions set by the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS). However, trading will not be as straightforward as it was before the restrictions. Aochamub warned that the situation is being closely monitored, and the company's operations will be reassessed accordingly.
The outbreak is currently confined to the //Karas area, and there have been no new outbreaks reported. If the situation remains under control, trading arrangements could be reassessed after 90 days. Aochamub expressed optimism that Meatco will be able to resume slaughtering operations by 23 October.
Meatco is taking steps to mitigate the impact of the outbreak on its operations. The company is working to ensure that its factories remain profitable and operational. Aochamub stated that it is premature to make decisions about widespread layoffs or significant downsizing of operations.
The company's management is closely monitoring the situation and will make decisions as necessary. Meatco's ability to resume slaughtering operations will depend on various factors, including the veterinary assessment and the situation on the ground. The company will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
