On September 26 and 27, Mauritius Tourism Minister Richard Duval embarked on a two-day mission to Rodrigues, focusing on infrastructure, employment, and connectivity. The visit, under the Tourism Employees Welfare Fund (TEWF), began with a high-level meeting at La Résidence, a colonial-era building constructed in 1887. Minister Duval met with Chief Commissioner Franceau Grandcourt to discuss strategic economic challenges. This visit precedes Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam's scheduled attendance at the 24th anniversary of Rodrigues' autonomy within the Republic of Mauritius on October 12.
During the mission, Minister Duval participated in a roundtable discussion with key local figures, including Tourism Commissioner Jean-Alain Wong So, TEWF President Rupesh Gujadhur, and Regional Assembly President Christian Léopold. Industry professionals highlighted daily operational challenges, emphasizing the need for closer collaboration with the ministry. With over 2,000 people employed directly in tourism on the island, Wong So stressed the importance of partnership. In response, Minister Duval confirmed that funding for a new high-tech training facility has been secured to enhance workforce skills and meet professional demands.
Minister Duval emphasized that the development of Rodrigues' tourism industry must preserve the island's unique identity. He advocated for a shift towards inland tourism, showcasing local heritage, craftsmanship, and daily life, rather than focusing solely on the coastline. Hospitality and training remain core pillars of this approach. The minister's vision aims to balance growth with authenticity, ensuring that the island's charm and lifestyle are safeguarded.
Infrastructure development was also a key topic, with discussions centered on Plaine-Corail airport. Minister Duval highlighted the need to anticipate changes in air transport and prepare the airport to accommodate higher-capacity aircraft. This upgrade would boost connectivity, handling prospective visitor growth while protecting Rodrigues' distinct character. TEWF Director-General Soobhiraj Goorapah and other stakeholders contributed to these discussions.
The ministerial visit concluded with a celebration of local culinary talent at the Best Tourte Competition prize-giving ceremony. Organized by the TEWF under the Ministry of Tourism, the contest followed a pastry training program held from September 22 to 26 in partnership with the Cotton Bay Resort & Spa. Marie Desina Henriette of Cotton Bay Hotel won first place for her creativity, and all participants received certificates.
The TEWF also provides assistance schemes and support facilities to workers, as briefed by Rupesh Gujadhur during the visit. These initiatives aim to support the well-being and professional development of tourism employees. The mission underscored the importance of balancing visitor growth with the preservation of Rodrigues' landscapes and lifestyle.
Rodrigues, located approximately 1.5 hours by flight from Mauritius and nearly two hours from Reunion Island, faces the challenge of growing its visitor numbers while maintaining its unique charm. The island's strategic location in the Indian Ocean requires careful management of tourism development to ensure sustainable growth and preservation of its distinct character.
