The Federation of Chinese Societies in Mauritius is organizing the second edition of the Food and Fun Festival on October 4 at the Chinese Culture House in Baie-du-Tombeau. The event aims to bring life to the peripheral region of Port-Louis and raise funds to renovate the Chinese Culture House, which was built over a decade ago. The Chinese Culture House, situated on an 8,625 square meter plot of land donated by the government, has become a hub for community activities. The University of the Third Age (U3AM) uses the facility for its morning activities, while locals pay a modest fee to play badminton, attend tai chi classes, or participate in line and ballroom dancing. However, the building has not undergone any major renovations since its construction and has developed leaks in its roof.
The first edition of the Food and Fun Festival, held last year, was a huge success, attracting over 1,500 people, exceeding the organizers' expectations of 700 to 800 attendees. The event raised Rs 350,000, which was used to impervious 20% of the roof and refurbish the dance floor. This year, the organizers are preparing for an even bigger event, with a larger food court, more cultural performances, and a children's play area featuring a bouncy castle.
The festival will begin with the traditional Lion Dance at 10 am, followed by the opening ceremony at 10:30 am. Attendees will have access to various stalls selling textiles, handicrafts, vegetables, and plants, as well as a food court offering a range of Chinese and local cuisine. The event will also feature cultural performances, including a concert by Raoul Ng Kwet Yam, also known as Pecos, and Michel Kwon.
The organizers, led by Yves Chan Kam Lon and Pierre Kong, are urging the public to attend the event, which promises to be a fun-filled day for the whole family. The entrance fee is only Rs 25, and children under 12 can enter for free. The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm, with ample parking available on site.
The funds raised from the festival will be used to continue the renovation work on the Chinese Culture House, including painting the walls and restoring the badminton court. The organizers are confident that the event will be a success and are inviting the public to come and enjoy the activities.
