On October 6, 2026, Mauritius Telecom (MT) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosted the Cloud-Data AI Executive Workshop for State-Owned Enterprises at the Conference Hall of Cyber Tower 1 in Ebène Cybercity. The event brought together over 125 delegates, including CEOs, Managing Directors, and technical responsible personnel from various public sector organizations. The workshop aimed to explore the potential of cloud, data management, and AI, with a focus on identifying concrete applications for public services.
Vasenden Dorasami, Head of AI and Public Sector at MT, discussed four evolving technological forces: computing power, networks, bandwidth, and storage density. He emphasized that while technology is rapidly changing, organizations are evolving much slower. To bridge this gap, Dorasami recommended establishing clear governance, making swift decisions, and continuously enhancing skills. The partnership between MT and AWS prioritizes training, with a focus on developing the skills of public sector professionals.
The CEO of MT, Veemal Gungadin, highlighted the company's ambition to train or support 50,000 Mauritians within a year in cloud, cybersecurity, and AI, as outlined in the 2026-2027 Budget. To achieve this goal, AWS content will be offered free of charge, ranging from online sessions to practical workshops, catering to both beginner and advanced levels. Discussions are also underway with higher education institutions to introduce micro-certifications.
Vikram Elango, Gen AI/ML specialist at AWS, presented several practical applications of AI, including AI-powered agents, fraud detection, citizen service automation, and document processing. These AI systems can handle various forms of data, such as text, voice, images, videos, and documents, in multiple languages. For instance, AI can assist citizens with pension applications, verify eligibility, and analyze documents, while also involving human agents when necessary.
The Minister of Information, Communication, and Innovation (TICI), Avinash Ramtohul, emphasized the need for public sector organizations to identify high-impact use cases and designate an "AI champion" within each ministry to coordinate initiatives and avoid duplication. He also advocated for a sovereign AI infrastructure, leveraging local data centers and enhanced data protection. Mauritius already boasts data centers, a fully fiber-optic network, and multiple undersea cables.
Robin Njiru, Public Sector Lead at AWS, noted the intensification of collaboration with Mauritian authorities and MT since the beginning of the year. AWS has over 140,000 clients, an annual business worth $170 billion, and a market capitalization of approximately $3,000 billion. Njiru stressed that the focus has shifted from experimenting with AI to deploying it at scale and demonstrating its impact, while prioritizing data protection, confidentiality, and sovereignty.
The partnership between Mauritius Telecom and AWS aims to accelerate the digital transformation of the public sector in Mauritius, with a focus on harnessing the potential of cloud, data, and AI to improve public services and drive economic growth. The collaboration will enable public sector organizations to leverage cutting-edge technologies and expertise, ultimately enhancing the lives of Mauritian citizens.
